Launched in 1991, LLNL’s Forensic Science Center (FSC) is home to nationally recognized scientists and capabilities that support chemical, nuclear, and biological counterterrorism. As one of two U.S. laboratories with international certification in identifying chemical warfare agents, the FSC analyzes interdicted samples, provides radiological assistance 24/7, prepares for potential nuclear device detonation, and delivers key assessments and technologies to the intelligence community including law enforcement, homeland security, and health professionals. FSC personnel are experts in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, nuclear chemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, special coatings, and forensic instrument design and fabrication.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory new bioAMS (biological accelerator mass spectrometer) is helping tackle biological science in a way that couldn't be done before. Over the past two years, Laboratory researchers have expedited accelerator mass spectrometer sample preparation and analysis time from days to minutes and moved a complex scientific process requiring accelerator physicists into routine laboratory usage.
The Lawrence Livermore Microbial Detection Array (LLMDA) can
identify thousands of different microbes within 24 hours for faster
diagnosis and treatment of biological threats.
Biological Applications of Advanced Strategic Computing (BAASiC): Enabling a revolutionary approach to improve biological understanding, human health and biosecurity by applying advanced computational technology bringing together large-scale simulation, deep analysis of complex and diverse data, and new targeted sensor and measurement technologies. BAASiC is a multi-institution initiative, led by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and including partners across academia, industry, and government.
